Control and Management Strategies
Early Detection
Regular inspections for signs of infestation enable early intervention, preventing extensive damage.
Biological Controls
Introducing natural predators or parasitoids of the weevil can be an environmentally friendly method of control.
Chemical Treatments
In severe cases, insecticidal treatments targeted at the larvae or adults may be necessary, with the selection of chemicals based on the severity of the infestation.
Quarantine Measures
Implementing quarantine measures for infected palms can help prevent the spread of the weevil to unaffected areas.

Treatment Options
1. Crown Spraying
Crown spraying is an insecticide treatment applied to the center meristem area, targeting active adults to disrupt their lifecycle. We rotate treatments with differing contact & systemic insecticides in an effort not to build up pest resistance to specific chemicals.
Factors to Consider:
- Public areas, parks, HOA, Riparian/overgrown areas may require special permissions.
- Cannot be applied in weather such as rain, wind, or heat.
- Very tall palms will be difficult to properly drench the crown.
- Should be repeated every 3 months for most effective control.
2. Trunk Injection
A systemic insecticide is injected directly into the vascular bundle of the palm. This has been found to be one of the most effective treatment options in controlling this pest.
Factors to Consider:
- Faster uptake than other treatment methods.
- Should be repeated every 3 months for most effective control.
3. Root & Soil Drench
Systemic insecticides are applied to the immediate root zone of the palm tree. The insecticide will trans-locate upward with the new fronds, helping protect against new feeding. Again, we rotate treatments with differing systemic insecticides in an effort not to build up pest resistance to specific chemicals.
Factors to Consider:
- Faster uptake than other treatment methods.
- Should be repeated every 3 months for most effective control.
